Au revoir 2009… Bonjour 2010!
La última entrada el año y toca recapitular. Viene siendo ya toda una pequeña tradición personal, que me ayuda a repasar mentalmente el año que dejo atrás y ponerme nuevas metas para el que viene. Como casi siempre, algunas no se cumplirán, pero, hey! vale la pena intentarlo.
No puedo decir que este año no haya sido un buen año. Al contrario, termino este 2009 con un buenísimo sabor de boca y si, más feliz que lo que terminé el año 2008. Y eso, amigos, es mucho, muchísimo. Pero no os aburriré y vayamos al grano.
1) Mi cortometraje “Nave #527” ha superado las 150.000 descargas y fue objeto de un artículo en el periódico El Pais. Después vinieron otros medios durante varias semanas (El ojo crítico, TVE Aragón, Heraldo de Aragón, Aragón TV, La 2, etc…). Este modesto éxito, fue personalmente muy gratificante como realizador, mi trabajo fue visto por mucha más gente de lo que yo había imaginado y de algún modo, me reconcilió conmigo mismo y mis miedos ante el oficio de la dirección, que no había abordado seriamente desde hace casi 8 años. Todavía me queda mucho por aprender, pero ya no tengo miedo a dar un paso adelante.
Durante esos 15 minutos de fama tuve muchos más detractores de los que he tenido en toda mi vida. Si me tomase personalmente algunos de los muchos comentarios negativos recibidos, estaría llorando por las esquinas. Pero algunas criticas me han servido para confirmar aquellos fallos que yo intuía y que debo intentar superar en el futuro.
2) He encontrado trabajo como responsable del departamento audiovisual en Confëttika. Allí trabajo principalmente como realizador y editor y os aseguro que – a dia de hoy – no hay nada mejor que que te paguen por hacer lo que realmente te gusta. Este es mi mayor éxito a nivel profesional desde hace años y espero exprimir la experiencia al máximo en el 2010.
3) Acabé el 2008 escribiendo un teaser de 15 minutos para una futura película titulada “Lithium”, una historia coral en torno a la vuelta de uno de los grupos de rock más influyentes de los 90. Era mi intento de escribir algo completamente nuevo y dejar atrás viejos texto e ideas. De camino, me encontré con mi viejo amigo Ric, con quien estoy escribiendo el guión, que además, está tomando una forma completamente distinta y muy interesante. Si algún día terminamos de escribirlo, será una gran historia. De momento, es un bonito proyecto que hasta ha cambiado de nombre.
4) En la cola de proyectos tengo un videoclip ya realizado que espero se estrene muy pronto, otro en preparación en el primer trimestre de 2010 y un documental sobre música. Espero que haya más, muchos más.
5) Mis gatos siguen su apacible vida cotidiana. Zeta está cada día más gordo y Nirvana cada día mas perezoso.
6) Mi chica también sigue ahí, aunque no entiendo como me aguanta si paso casi todo el tiempo sentado en el ordenador o hablándole de cientos de proyectos que nunca llevo a cabo. Uno de mis propósitos para el 2010 es hablarle menos de estos proyectos y vivir más el presente junto a ella.
7) Algunos de mis mejores amigos han sido padres. Tienen mi misma edad. Algo me dice que la vida es exactamente como me la contaron. Soy mucho más feliz desde que lo he aceptado. Bienvenidos pequeñines!
8) No recuerdo cuanto hace que termino un año con un sentimiento tan positivo. Espero que dure. Espero saber mantenerlo. Y sobre todo, mi mayor propósito para el 2010 es iniciar lo que he aprendido en el 2009: Dejar de pensar en hacer cosas, y llevarlas a cabo.

This is the last video I’ve directed at Confëttika for TBS. It’s a Christmas in which all the employees got involved. We used a snorricam, that we “build” for the shooting, with an harness from a steadycam, a tripod and some straps (and a lot of practice). We shoot on a Canon 5D Mark II and a wide angle (16mm).

Rehearsal The Closers “Here again”
Very shortly I’ll direct a music video for the song “Come down” from the guys of “The Closers”, a rock/electronic band from Zaragoza. If you don’t know them, download freely their EP “The end” here. A few months ago I went with my old DV Sony PC-120 camera and recorded their rehearsal. The sound is from the camera, so it sounds quite bad. This is the result.

Awards party “3, 2, 1… acción”
Last friday 27 mars, took place the party for the online shortfilm festival “3, 2, 1, acción”, organized by yuglo, where “Nave #527″ won the 3e prize. The party was in the Angelika Cinema Lounge, in Madrid.

“Nave #527″ selected at KAN Film Festival
“Nave #527″ has been selected at the 10th Amateur and Independent Film Festival KAN in the Foreign Film Competition. The festival will take place between the 22th and 26 th April in Wroclaw, Poland.
Teaserland contest finalists
The 20 finalists of the spanish fake trailer contest Teaserland have been announced. There’s a little for everyone taste, but the technical quality of most of them is remarkable. They’re a goob pitching excercise.

“Nave #527″ review at Heraldo
Today, the spanish newspaper “Heraldo de Aragón”, under the title “Two shortfilms from aragon, getting succes on the net”, writes about the succes on the net of Nacho Rubio shortfilm “El punto” and mine “Nave #527″.
Yesterday, 26 june, the digital version of Heraldo.es had already featured the 50.000 views of “Nave #527″ in the homepage under the title “A dark shortfilm ‘Made in Aragon’ getting success on the net”. The review highlights the film direction quality. This has bring the vimeo of the shortfilm (the one that they embed on the review) to get 3.000 hits, just yesterday.
The shortfilm is available in three versions, spanish, english and french. The english version is the most viewed as a whole. This is the views of “Nave #527″ from the last 23/02:

(Español) The Closers – The End EP [2009]
The band “The Closers” – that I will soon direct a music video – has released a 4 tracks self-produced EP as a teaser of their forthcoming debut album. It’s freely available for download at their website. Their sounds flows between NIN, Filter and Deftones. I highly recommend it.

“Nave #527″ has reached 50.000 views
Today, my shortfilm “Nave #527″ has reached 50.000 views (exact number is 49.200) among the differents video sharing platforms where it’s available. The main views sharing goes like this:
- Dailymotion: 32%
- Myspace: 27%
- Youtube: 26%
First of all: Knowing how the video sharing websites log their views, you must be very conscious that one view doesn’t mean a real watcher. Probably, for a 19 min. shortfilm a lot of people wouldn’t watch the full shortfilm until the end and other would just be gone after 10 seconds. Anyway, even if 30-40% of these results were accurate (aprox. 20.000), I’ll really happy with them. Think about how many festivals screenings you need to acomplish such an audience. As an indie filmmaker, this is unreachable by the traditional way.
Mostly the new traffic comes from Youtube and Myspace, and also from other online shorfilm festivals websites where the shortfilm is competing rigth now (Xauax, Babelgum, Shots, Icewhole). For Youtube, mostly visits came in from the shortfilm myspace and direct search for terms like “Scifi shortfilm” or “Horror shortfilm”. For Myspace TV, the traffic is generated directly inside the website. For the others sources, the traffic is more fragmented among the websites.
This seems to clear up that the strategy we used for the shortfilm, a fragmented distribution throught a moderated traffic generatd in many sources (global websites and specilized) is a good one, working much better that a strategy based on trying to generatd huge traffic from general video sharing websites like Youtube. And it’s unquestionable, that Myspace, via their video sharing website and the active promotion among users geenrate a lot of traffic and is very effective.
I hope that I could write in the following weeks something about the lifespan of the shortfilm since the release on the internet last year, what I’ve learned and the conclusions that can be made about the digital promotion and distribution.
